Iran has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to protest the killing of Hassan Nasrallah, head of Lebanon's pro-Shiite political party and armed organization Hezbollah.

Iran called on the UN Security Council on Saturday. Nasrullah was killed in an Israeli attack on Friday night. He led Hezbollah for more than three decades.

Iran has sent a letter asking for an urgent meeting of the Security Council. A copy of the letter sent to the Security Council was obtained by AFP.

The letter was given by Amir Saeed Eravani, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations. The letter calls on the Security Council to take immediate and decisive action to stop Israel's ongoing aggression, to prevent the region from being dragged into full-scale war.

In a letter to the 15-member Security Council, Iran's Ambassador Eravani warned against any attack on his country's diplomatic premises and representatives, the BBC reported. Said, Tehran will not tolerate such aggression.

In the letter, Iravani said Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent rights under international law to protect its vital national and security interests.

Iran has been supporting Hezbollah financially and militarily for years. Earlier, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that the killing of Nasrullah will be avenged.
