Brazil is angry with the role of the United Nations in the Gaza-Ukraine war

Yesterday was the opening day of the G20 foreign ministerial meeting, February 21

Brazil considers the role of the UN Security Council to be 'passive' regarding the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

The country criticized this on the opening day of the meeting of foreign ministers of the G20 economic alliance in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. Brazil is the current president of the G-20 alliance.

Yesterday was the first day of the two-day meeting. This is the first summit meeting of the G20 alliance this year.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also participated in the two-day G-20 conference. On the opening day of the conference, Brazil's top diplomat Mauro Vieira said that global conflicts have shown that international institutions such as the United Nations are not working.

He also said, "The unacceptable stagnation of the Security Council on the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine shows that multilateral institutions are not equipped to deal with the current challenges."

European Union foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said at the conference that multilateralism is now in crisis.

The Security Council has failed to take any action on Russia's operations in Ukraine. Because Russia itself has the power to veto in the Security Council. Similarly, the council could not take action against Israel over the war in Gaza. Because Israel's ally, the United States, vetoed the call for a ceasefire.

Last Sunday, Brazilian President Lula Inacio da Silva said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. He compared Israel's military operations to the Holocaust. Israel was very angry about this. The country declared Lula 'undesirable'.

Blinken met with Lula at the presidential palace in Brasilia on Wednesday before leaving for the G20 summit. A senior US State Department official told reporters that during the meeting, Blinken made it clear to Lula that the United States did not agree with his (Lula's) comments.

The US Secretary of State and the President of Brazil held the meeting for more than 90 minutes. The official said that there was an open discussion between the two leaders.

A Brazilian official said that Lavrov will meet Lula in Brasilia on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Lavrov expressed his anger over the massive supply of arms to Ukraine by the Western world.

In an interview with Brazilian newspapers and Globo, he said that neither Kiev nor the Western world showed political will to resolve the conflict.
