Attempts to arrest South Korea's impeached president are thwarted by protesters and security forces

Investigators are seen entering the president's residence in South Korea

The residence of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been cordoned off to arrest him. However, local media reported that the security forces are trying to resist them.

His supporters were seen protesting in front of Yeol's residence. Yole supporters gathered in front of the President's residence with posters and banners. They are chanting slogans against Yeol's arrest.

The country's corruption investigation office says it has begun executing an arrest warrant against President Yoon Suk-yeol. Officers of the Bureau of Investigation and the police were seen entering Yeol's residence.

AFP journalists at the scene said that investigative staff including Senior Counsel Lee Dae Huan are trying to enter the residence after passing through the tight security fence. According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, they were repelled by a group of soldiers inside Yeol's residence.

It is unclear whether the president's security personnel will comply with investigators' warrants. Presidential security personnel have earlier resisted police attempts to enter Yole's residence.

Yeol's lawyer Eon Cap Keun said the execution of the illegal warrant was not legal.

An AFP reporter at the scene said that several police buses and several hundred policemen were seen stationed at the president's residence.

On Thursday, YOL supporters clashed with anti-YOL protesters. 2 thousand 700 police and 135 police buses have been deployed at the spot to keep the situation under control.

According to South Korean media reports, investigating officers want to take Yeol to their office in Gwacheon, near Seoul, for questioning after her arrest. According to the terms of the arrest warrant, he can be kept there for 48 hours. Another warrant will be required to arrest him.

A Seoul court issued a warrant to search Yeol's residence, an investigating official told AFP.
