Russian forces detained a British citizen who took part in the Ukraine war against Russia

    James Scott Rees Anderson

Russian troops have detained a British mercenary who was fighting against Russian forces on behalf of the Ukrainian army in Russia's Kursk region. A security-related source told the Russian state news agency RIA.

In a report published in RIA on Sunday, the source said that a British mercenary has been detained. He said his name was James Scott Rees Anderson. Collecting information from him.

A video posted yesterday on a pro-Russian channel on the messaging service Telegram showed a young man in military uniform kneeling. His hands are tied from behind. He said his name is James Scott Rees Anderson and he once served in the British Army.

Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the video and the RIA and other media reports. It is also not clear when the video was recorded. There was no immediate response from the British Foreign Office for comment.

According to a BBC report, the British Foreign Office said that they stand by the family of the citizen after he was detained.

The Ukrainian army launched a surprise attack on the Kursk region on the Russian border last August.

A part of the territory is still under the control of Ukrainian forces. Kiev says it has lost control of more than 40 percent of the territory it already holds. Russian troops have intensified counter-operations there.
