A group of armed assailants have killed at least 40 people in a village in central Mali. Local officials gave this information on Tuesday.
The attack took place on Monday in Jiguibombo village in Mapati region. Various jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS) have been active in several areas of northern and central Mali for more than a decade.
It was a terrible attack," Bancas mayor Maule Guindo told Reuters by telephone. The attackers surrounded the entire village and fired at people. Mayor Guindo could not say how many people were killed in the attack. However, two local officials said on condition of anonymity that about 40 people were killed. One of them said it was genocide.
A wedding was going on in the village where the attack took place. There was an atmosphere of extreme panic. A few people managed to escape, but most were killed, most of the dead being men. They could not give any idea about who did this attack. So far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
