The Palestinian armed group Hamas has asked Israel to pressurize it to accept a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas said this in a statement on Thursday.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently visited the Middle East to discuss the ceasefire proposal announced by President Joe Biden.
"Antony Blinken continues to talk about accepting Israel's latest (ceasefire) offer," Hamas said in a statement. But we have not yet heard any Israeli officials speak about it.
In the statement, Hamas asked Blinken to put direct pressure on Israel.
On May 31, US President Biden announced a proposal for a Gaza ceasefire. Hamas gave its first official response to the proposal last Tuesday.
The Palestine Liberation Organization said their "positive" response had "paved the way" to a deal to end eight months of fighting in the Valley. But they want a ceasefire that would bring a permanent end to the Gaza war.
In response to this response from Hamas, Israel said that this response consisted in rejecting the offer.
However, after meeting with Israeli officials in Tel Aviv, Blinken told reporters last Tuesday that this statement by Hamas is a "sign of hope".
Blinken added, 'More importantly, this statement came from Gaza and from the leadership of Hamas. We have not received such a formal statement from them on the proposal before.
Recently, Biden's cease-fire proposal was passed almost unanimously in the UN Security Council. 14 votes were cast in favor of the motion. Russia abstained from voting on the US-backed resolution, although there were no votes against.
Meanwhile, despite the passage of this resolution, Israel continued to attack Gaza, especially in its central and southern areas. Mass loss of life is happening every day.
