Israel will accept Gaza cease-fire offer if Hamas agrees, US hopes

US National Security Council spokesman John Kerby

US National Security Council adviser John Kerby said that the United States is hopeful that Israel will agree to the Palestinian ceasefire proposal in Gaza. If Gaza's ruling group Hamas accepts the proposal, a six-week ceasefire will come into effect in the Gaza Strip.

John Kirby said this in an interview given to ABC News on Sunday morning local time. Noting that he is waiting for an official response from Hamas, he said, the United States hopes that the two sides will agree to implement the first phase of the ceasefire as soon as possible.

John Kerby also said the two sides would meet in the first phase of the six-week ceasefire. During this time they will discuss and decide what the second phase of ceasefire will look like and when it can be started.

US President Joe Biden last week proposed a three-phase ceasefire in Gaza. According to the proposal, humanitarian aid will be increased in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Hamas will release some hostages during the ceasefire. In return, Palestinians held in Israeli prisons will be released.

However, several members of the Israeli government strongly opposed the ceasefire proposal. Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir said they were against signing any deal with the group before eliminating Hamas.

Israel has been carrying out massive airstrikes in Gaza's Rafah for weeks. A large number of people are losing their lives. The whole world is vocal about this. Meanwhile, a ceasefire proposal is being discussed in Gaza.

Residents of 36 refugee camps in Rafah have been forced to leave, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said. The shelters are now empty.
