Thousands of migrants try to cross Tunisia-Libya coast to Europe
The bodies of 22 migrants have been found off the coast of the Tunisian port city of Sfax in the last few days. They are believed to be sub-Saharan migrants. A spokesperson of the country's court gave this information on Tuesday.
Sfax court spokesman Hisem bin Ayed told AFP that 22 bodies had been found on the coast near the port of Sidi Youssef since last Saturday.
Hisem bin Ayed also said that these are believed to be the bodies of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. The bodies have been sent to a local morgue.
The spokesperson of the court mentioned that it is not clear whether these immigration aspirants left in one or more boats. He could not give detailed information about this.
Yesterday the Tunisian authorities published a statement on social media Facebook. It is said that they have arrested five people for their involvement in sending illegal migrants to Europe from different coasts of the country.
In addition to Tunisia, the coast of neighboring Libya has become the main point of departure for thousands of migrants from various countries entering Europe. They risked dangerous voyages in hopes of a better life in Europe.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IMO), in 2023, 2,498 people either died or went missing while crossing the Mediterranean Sea to enter Europe. This number is 75 percent more than the previous year.
