Iran has retaliated for the killing of senior generals in the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, by directly attacking Israel with missiles and drones from its territory. Analysts say that Iran has asserted its capabilities as well as protecting its honor by launching more than three hundred drone and missile attacks on Israel last Saturday night.
But in doing so, the country is taking a big risk. Now the question is, will Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consider the success of his country's air defense system as an appropriate response or will he increase the tension by directly attacking Iran?
Iranian officials and analysts say that Iran has attacked Israel as they say. But they don't want to escalate the tension any further. They targeted only Israeli military sites and installations in the attack, not seeking any civilian casualties. Apart from this, it has been reported in many places before the attack.
Ali Vayez, director of Iran affairs at the International Crisis Group, a global crisis research organization, said, "The Iranian government took the Damascus attack as a strategic turning point. To answer this, failure would have done them more harm than good. But counter-attacking, which has been their shadow war with Israel for so long, risks a real and more serious conflict.'
Sanam Vakil, director of Middle East and North Africa at UK-based think tank Chatham House, said that Iran has played the cards in their hands. For six months, they have watched, cornered in the Middle East.
Brigadier General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran's top army officer, said that the operation has been fully successful. There is no intention to continue the campaign. However, he added, "If Israel strikes Iranian interests on Iranian territory or elsewhere, our next operation will be even bigger."
Iran has been attacked by Israel one after another for several years. Israel has been accused of carrying out various attacks such as the secret killing of Iranian nuclear scientists, military officers, explosions in nuclear and military fields, and cyber attacks.
Israel launched a massive attack on Gaza from October 7. Since then, attacks on Iranian interests and Iranian commanders in Syria have begun.
Vakil said there was a need for Tehran to respond appropriately to Israel, despite extensive Western diplomatic support for Israel and US cooperation. Now the old equation of the two countries has changed.
No more shadow wars, both sides are ready to attack directly. After the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, a new dangerous chapter began with Iran's response.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a clear message ordering the attack from Iranian territory. Iran can no longer show 'strategic patience'.
