A displaced family in Mozambique
More than 90 people have died after a ferry capsized off the northern coast of the East African country of Mozambique. The local authority has informed this information.
Officials said there were about 130 passengers on the ferry at the time of the accident in the country's Nampula province. Five people were rescued alive.
Nampula Provincial Minister Jaimie Neto said the ferry passengers were leaving the area to avoid the outbreak of cholera. Among the dead are many children.
Videos circulating on social media showed bodies lined up on the beach.
The ferry was traveling from Lunga to the Nampula coast to the island of Mozambique.
Cholera is well-established in the Nampula province of Mozambique. Several African countries have seen cholera outbreaks since January last year.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said the worst cholera outbreak in 25 years.
Since October last year, 13,700 people have contracted cholera in Mozambique. During this time, 30 people died of cholera in the country.
