Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch
Controversy has arisen over awarding this year's award to the late US Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The objection was raised by the family members of the judge.
Controversy — SpaceX founder Elon Musk and media mogul Rupert Murdoch are among the nominees for this year's award.
Ginsburg's family wants to withdraw the name of the award after the names of these two American billionaires appeared on the list.
In a statement, they said, "This year's nominees for the award have departed from the true purpose of the Opperman Foundation Award and the issues Justice Ginsburg stood for."
Ginsburg's family said they were not involved with the award and that this year's nominees were an "insult" to Ginsburg's memory. At the same time, they also supported a letter from Trevor Morrison, the former subordinate officer of the late judge.
In the letter, Trevor Morrison wrote, "The values to which the former judge dedicated his career and for which he has become a figure of respect around the world, are not reflected in this year's nominees for the award."
Ruth Bader Ginsburg gained popularity as a liberal justice on the US Supreme Court. He died in 2020 at the age of 87. He has supported several important social issues in the United States, such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage and immigration.
This year, apart from Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch, television star Martha Stewart, actor Sylvester Stallone and investor Michael Milken are on the Ginsburg Prize list.
The organizer of the award, the Opperman Foundation, said last Wednesday that the award is celebrated with those who have shown extraordinary achievements in their respective fields.
According to the Opperman Foundation, women have been recognized with this award before. This year the range has been expanded to include men who have contributed in various fields. "Justice Ginsburg fought not just for women, but for everyone," said Julie Opperman, chairman of the foundation.
