Anti-government candidate Basiru Diomaye Faye won the presidential election in the African country of Senegal. He received more than 54 percent of the votes in this election, according to the Court of Appeal in Senegal's capital, Dakar.
Yesterday local time, the court said that the counting of 100% of the votes has been completed. Faye received more than 54 percent of the vote. It is expected that the Constitutional Council of Senegal will confirm the results in the near future.
In the election, the candidate of the ruling coalition, Amadu, is in the second position with more than 35 percent of the votes. Aliyu Mamadou came third. He got 2.8 percent of the votes.
43-year-old Faye is known as a newcomer to Senegalese politics. He is quite popular among the angry youth of the country. If he takes office, Faye will be the youngest president in Senegal's history.
On March 24, the presidential election was held in Senegal. Faye was released from prison ten days ago. Then he showed surprise. After learning the results of the vote, Faye said he wanted to break the current political system in Senegal.
Faye has already been congratulated by rival candidate Amadu Ba. Faye was congratulated by the outgoing president of Senegal, Macky Sall. He said, through this, "Senegal's democracy has won".
Mackey Sall won the 2012 and 2019 presidential elections. He did not participate in this election.
