Indian troops to leave Maldives by May 10: Muijju in Parliament

The President of the Maldives is Mohammed Muijju

The country's president, Mohamed Muijju, has warned that no country's interference on the sovereignty of the Maldives will be accepted. He gave this warning in his speech given at the first parliament session of this year in Maldives on Monday. Muizzoo also said that Indian troops will leave Maldives by May 10. The local media reported this information.

According to the Maldivian constitution, the country's president is required to address the first session of parliament every year. Accordingly, Muijju addressed the first session of Parliament today. However, MPs of the two main opposition parties, MDP and Democrats, boycotted the president's speech.

Muijju said Indian troops will withdraw from one of the three airfields in the Maldives by March 10. Indian troops will leave the other two airfields by May 10.

President Muijju also said, "We will not allow any country to interfere with our sovereignty or undermine our sovereignty."

87 Indian troops are deployed in Maldives. Muijju promised to withdraw all Indian troops from Maldives if he won the election. He campaigned to change the 'Bharat Pratham' (India First) policy in the Maldives. Muijju won the presidential election in September last year. And last November he was sworn in as the President of Maldives.

Muijju has faced the wrath of the opposition in his own country for taking an anti-India stance. Today MDP and Democrats boycotted his speech.

There are 56 MPs from the MDP and Democrat-2 parties in the 87-seat Parliament of Maldives.

Seven MPs have resigned to join the administrative ranks of the Muizju government. From that side, 24 MPs listened to the President's speech in the 80-member parliament session.

According to local media, this is the largest boycott in the history of the Maldivian Parliament.

Members of the MDP and Democrats are also pushing for the impeachment of President Muizzou.
