The only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip
Two women were killed by Israeli soldiers on Saturday in the compound of the only Catholic church in Gaza City, Palestine. They are Christians in religion and mother-daughter relationship. This was stated in a statement from the office of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.
The Church of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem is the top regional office. It looks after the Catholics of four countries – Israel, Palestine, Cyprus and Jordan.
The statement said, "An army of the Israeli army killed two Christian women inside the Holy Family Parish of the Catholic Community in Gaza around noon today." After the start of the Israeli-Palestinian war on October 7, the Christian families took refuge in the church premises.
The statement further said that Nahida and her daughter Samar were shot dead while on their way to the sannyasi mutt. First one was shot, while the other tried to take him to safety and was also shot dead.
The statement also mentioned that seven others were injured in the firing while trying to save others.
An elderly woman and her daughter were killed, the Vatican press agency said, citing Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.
When asked about this by AFP, the Israeli army said that they are investigating the incident.
The church premises where the incident took place is the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip. The Latin Patriarch said no warning was given before the shooting.
A monastery was also shelled by Israeli tanks, the statement said. Generators and fuel supplies were shut down in the attack. A building has become uninhabitable. There were 54 physically challenged persons living there. They are now displaced. Some of them need respirators but do not have respirators.
According to the Vatican Press Agency, three people were injured in these attacks.
Italy's top diplomat Antonio Tajani called on the Israeli government and army to ensure the protection of Christian places of worship.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Hamas terrorists are not hiding in them."
