Scenes of the detention of Palestinians in Gaza have sparked strong reactions on social media
The US-based international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that the inhuman treatment of Israeli forces with Palestinians detained in Gaza amounts to "war crimes".
HRW official Omar Shakir has condemned the video footage of Palestinians detained by Israel in Gaza being undressed and half-naked (in underwear). He is HRW's Director of Palestine and Israel Affairs.
Omar Shakir said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the Israeli army published shocking pictures of Palestinian men detained in Gaza undressed and blindfolded as an attack on their (Palestinian) personal dignity.
This is a form of inhumane treatment, amounting to war crimes. In this case, Shakir mentioned a clause of the Geneva Convention.
This HRW official commented that the criminals involved in the incident should be held accountable.
Family members of several of the men featured in the video have denied claims by Israeli forces. They said their male relatives in the video are not members of Hamas.
According to the BBC report, some videos and still images of Palestinians detained by Israeli forces in Gaza have been published online.
It shows several men (arrested Palestinians) standing on the road. They are wearing underwear. Many of them have their hands up. A man in underwear surrenders his weapon.
The Israel Defense Forces did not directly respond to questions about the video incident. However, an Israeli army spokesman told the BBC that the suspects had to be stripped of their clothes for the purpose of the search.
This is to ensure that they are not hiding explosives or other weapons. However, the detainees were treated in accordance with international law.
Many have expressed deep concern about the treatment of Palestinians detained in Gaza. Strongly condemned.
