Location of Naqsh-i Jahan Square in Isfahan city
Since the recent attack on Iran, there has been a lot of discussion about the country's Isfahan city. The city was the capital of the Persian Empire during the reign of the Safavid dynasty. Also in January 2023, a military factory owned by the Iranian army in Isfahan was attacked using several drones. Iran's main nuclear power plant, Natanz, is located in the city of Isfahan.
Few things to know about the city of Ispahan:
Isfahan was the capital city during the reign of the Safavid dynasty from 1598 to 1736. Shah Abbas made it his capital. The city was renovated in the seventeenth century and became one of the largest cities in the world.
About 2.2 million people live in Isfahan city. It is the third most populous city in Iran. The other two populous cities are the current capital Tehran and Mashhad.
Again the population of the greater Ispahan province is 4 million. In that respect, it is considered the second largest metropolitan area in modern Iran.
Naqsh-e Jahan Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in Isfahan. It was built between 1598 and 1629. It is considered to be the largest ancient square in the world.
Next to this is the Grand Bazaar. It is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the Middle East.
