Putin is coming back to power in Russia

    Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to run for re-election later this week to ensure he remains in power for another six years. Voting will be held from March 15 to 17.

From the last day of 1999, he is sometimes the president of the country, sometimes the prime minister. Putin has imposed such control, quashing all opposition and dissent, that his victory is beyond doubt.

The vote comes at a time when the former KGB agent's confidence is high. This time, however, three people are competing with Putin. Kremlin-approved candidates are said to have sanctioned these candidates to give the election a form of competition.

On the other hand, anti-Putin politician Boris Nadezhdin was barred from participating in the elections. Because he called to spread the message of peace, and thousands of Russians supported him.

Meanwhile, in recent months, Russian troops have achieved significant success on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Although Putin is seen by the West as an aloof head of state from the rest of the world, the Kremlin says the upcoming vote will show Russians how united they are behind Putin and his aggressive stance.

Last year, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, "He has no rival at the moment and cannot have."

The election is very important for the Kremlin, Catham House Fellow Nikolai Petrov told AFP. He said, "It is necessary to show that the Russians have extensive support for Putin with regard to military aggression."

The Kremlin's goal is to secure the highest number of votes for Putin in the previous four elections.

In the 2018 election results, Putin received 77.5 percent of the vote. Although the election was not contested to speak of, there were widespread allegations of forced ballot box stuffing, fraud and forced voting.
