Venezuela disqualifies opposition presidential candidate

 

    

Venezuela's Supreme Court on Friday disqualified opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Before the election, he was declared ineligible to run for the presidency.

Machado easily won the primary last year. The court upheld opposition leader Machado's 15-year ban from public office. In addition, two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles has been disqualified as a possible opposition leader.

The United States and other countries have repeatedly called for a reconsideration of disqualifying opposition candidates before elections. Election dates in Venezuela have not yet been announced.

Last year, the Maduro government and the opposition agreed to hold free and fair elections in the Caribbean island of Barbados. International observers will be present at this year's elections.

After that, the United States eased sanctions on Venezuela. Western sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war have allowed Chevron to limit oil production to keep global prices stable.

However, Maduro did not clarify whether he will run for a third term in the presidential election; However, Maduro is expected to run for a third term.
