Netanyahu ignores pressure on Palestinian state

    Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel should maintain control over the security of all Palestinian territories.

The Israeli prime minister said his conditions were "antithetical" to the establishment of a future Palestinian state.

Netanyahu made this comment yesterday Saturday. With these comments, he ignored the pressure on Netanyahu's government from the United States and others to commit to a future Palestinian state.

Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone last Friday. In the phone conversation, they discussed the future of the Palestinian territories.

The Israeli prime minister's latest divergent stance appears to deepen a rift between his government and the United States over the future governance of Gaza and the West Bank after the conflict.

The US believes in a future Palestinian state alongside Israel. The concept is known as the 'two-state solution', which is important for long-term stability.

But the White House acknowledged last week that the US and Israeli governments clearly see the issues differently.

Biden and Netanyahu spoke on the phone for the first time in almost a month. Biden insisted to reporters after the call that a two-state solution is still possible while Netanyahu remains prime minister.

But yesterday Netanyahu reinforced his stance on the issue, which he has maintained for most of his political career. He reiterated his position earlier last week as well.

A statement from Netanyahu's office about the phone conversation with Biden. It said Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his policy in a conversation with President Biden.

He said Israel must maintain security control over Gaza after Hamas is destroyed, so that Gaza can no longer pose a threat to Israel. This is a requirement that conflicts with Palestine's claim to sovereignty.
