UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Israel's "blatant and persistent rejection of the two-state solution" was unacceptable. This can only prolong the conflict in Gaza.
Guterres said this at the beginning of a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York on Tuesday. The issue of sending relief to Palestine's Gaza was the central topic of the meeting.
The UN secretary-general said rejection of a Palestinian state would only embolden extremists everywhere. would prolong the conflict indefinitely.
Guterres told the UN Security Council that the clear and continued rejection of the two-state solution from the highest levels of the Israeli government last week was unacceptable.
Guterres said the ongoing conflict, which threatens world peace and security, will continue indefinitely as a result of this refusal and the denial of statehood to the Palestinian people.
The UN Secretary General said the two-state solution is the only way out of the endless cycle of fear, hatred and violence. A two-state solution is the only way to address the legitimate aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians.
Guterres said the people of Gaza are suffering destruction at a scale and speed unprecedented in history. Collective punishment of the people of Gaza is in no way justified.
The UN Secretary General also condemned Hamas's "targeted killing, wounding, abduction of civilians, sexual violence against them".
According to Al-Jazeera's report, the Palestinian independence organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7. According to the Israeli government, more than 1,000 people were killed in the attack.
In response, the Israeli forces started attacking Gaza from October 7. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks.
