At the same time, Israel has detained more Palestinians than have been released through prisoner exchanges
Yazen Alhasnat sits next to his mother at his home in Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. This 17-year-old boy was rubbing his eyes to avoid sleep. He was released from an Israeli prison the night before. About five months ago, he was abducted from his home early one morning by the Israeli forces.
Yazen spent almost five months in an Israeli prison. He was held in 'Executive Order Detention' without charge. "They (Israeli authorities) have a secret file," says the newly released Yazen. They won't tell you what's in it.'
Yazen is one of 180 Palestinian women and children freed in exchange for hostages held by the Gaza pro-independence group Hamas. According to Al-Jazeera's report on Hamas leaders, the purpose of the October 7 attack was to capture people from Israel and hold them in Gaza to free Palestinians through prisoner exchanges.
However, Israel has detained a record number of Palestinians, more than those released through prisoner exchanges. The number of 'executive order detentions' since October 7 has already reached a 30-year high. After October 7, 2 thousand 800 people were arrested.
According to Al-Jazeera, the total number of Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli prisons has exceeded 10,000.
That journalist himself was injured this time
Al-Jazeera journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh, who lost his wife and children in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, was also injured this time. He went to collect news of an Israeli attack on Khan Yunis, the second largest city in Gaza, on Friday. Al-Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief Wael was injured in the second attack. His cameraperson Samer Abudaka was also injured.
Wael was hit by a bullet on his upper arm. He was taken to Al-Nasser Hospital. However, he said, cameraperson Abudaka's injuries are serious. He could not be rescued due to continuous shelling by the Israeli forces.
Earlier, on October 24, the wife, son, daughter and grandson of journalist Wael were killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza. However, he returned to work within a few days.
