A tunnel file in Gaza, Palestine
The Israeli army has started pouring sea water into the tunnels of the Palestinian independence organization Hamas in Gaza. This process can continue for several weeks. The Wall Street Journal has published such news about US officials.
US President Joe Biden was asked about this at the press conference. But he refused to say anything directly. He only said that he had been assured that none of the people captured by Hamas from Israel were in those tunnels.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the condition of anonymity to several US officials that the water had been poured into the tunnel. According to the report, Israel has recently started pouring water through irrigation from the sea into the huge labyrinth of Hamas tunnels in Gaza.
Another US media outlet, ABC News, later published a similar report. It is said that this process of pouring water seems to be carried out on a limited scale. Because, Israel is evaluating the effectiveness of the strategy.
Israel's military said it was investigating the reports. A spokesman for the country's defense ministry declined to comment.
At a press conference in Washington, Biden was asked about the Wall Street Journal and ABC News reports. In response, Biden said, he is unable to say anything about pouring water into the tunnel.
It is claimed that none of the hostages were kept in any of these tunnels. But I am not sure about this," said Biden.
The US President also said, 'I know every civilian death is a very sad event. And Israel has spoken of their intentions, as I have said. They are implementing their words.
Some Biden administration officials told the Wall Street Journal that it may be possible to destroy the tunnels by pouring water. Israel believes that Hamas hides hostages and fighters in these tunnels. There is also a Hamas weapons depot.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, some officials have expressed concern that Gaza's fresh water supply could be at risk due to seawater dumping.
